Minecraft Server Won't Start: Causes and Fixes

Diagnose startup failures using server status, console output, logs, software compatibility and file checks — no local server logs to dig through, everything is in the browser.

Common Startup Problems

  • Insufficient memory allocation
  • Plugin, mod or datapack version incompatibility
  • Invalid server properties or startup configuration
  • Corrupted world or server files
  • Minecraft, loader and Java version incompatibility

Check Status, Console and Logs First

  1. Open the server overview and confirm whether the status is offline, starting or restarting.
  2. Press Start once and wait for the button operation to finish.
  3. Open Console and find the first error or exception in the current startup attempt.
  4. Open Logs for more context around the same timestamp.
  5. Record the plugin, mod, world or configuration file named by the error.

Verify Software and Content Compatibility

Confirm the Minecraft version matches the selected Paper, Fabric, Forge or other server build. Then check every recently installed plugin or mod. Remove the newest incompatible content, restore the previous version if available and start the server again.

Never downgrade a world without understanding the data risk. Download the world and important files before confirming a software reset.

Check Memory and Configuration

Large modpacks, high view distance and busy worlds may need more RAM. Review the resource configuration and estimated credit usage before increasing memory. If the error names server.propertiesor another configuration file, correct the invalid value and restart.

Use Full Reset Only as the Last Step

A full server reset permanently removes server data and rebuilds the server. Download anything you need first. Automatic backups are not part of the alpha MVP, so do not use reset as a routine troubleshooting action.
